The government for the city of Mortons Gap is comprised of a Mayor and a City Council.

The Mayor is elected on a partisan basis every four years. The Mayor is to supervise and administer all departments of government. The Mayor presides over all the Council meetings, but votes only to break a tie. The Mayor may veto ordinances adopted by the Council, subject to override if one (1) more than a simple majority of the entire membership of the legislative body votes to override.

The City Council is elected every two years. There are six members to the City Council. The City Council is to serve as the legislative arm of the city.
